Always attracted to color, texture, and pattern, Amanda Murphy has been designing, drawing, and sewing since she was a child. After graduating with a bachelor of fine arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University, she worked as a graphic designer and art director in Alexandria, Virginia, and New York City. ﾠAfter moving to North Carolina with her family Amanda discovered quilting, an art that marries her passion for design with her enthusiasm for handwork. As she gradually expanded her knowledge of sewing and quilting techniques and combined them with the ideas she had been sketching over the years, Amanda Murphy Design was born.
Amanda markets her own full-color pattern line under the Amanda Murphy Design label and has designed several fabric collections. Her fourth collection with Benartex will debut in Summer 2016.Amanda is also the author of several books with C&T Publishing including the best-selling Modern Holiday and The Free-Motion Quilting Idea Book. A companion sampler and app will be debuting soon. Amanda Murphy is a quilt and fabric designer whose style bridges the modern and traditional. She is a BERNINA Expert and Quilting and Longarm Spokesperson, an international teacher, pattern designer, and Benartex fabric designer. She also designs quilting rulers for Brewer Sewing, embroidery and quilting collections for OESD, and has authored several books for C&T publishing.
Jenifer joined OUAQ 10 years ago and is our “Jill of all Trades”. She operates our long-arm and teaches classes in all things BERNINA. Jenifer is an expert in garment sewing, machine embroidery and computer digitizing. She enjoys spreading her knowledge to others and seeing the delight on others’ faces at the completion of a project!
Jenifer joined us after moving from Charleston, SC where she also worked at the local BERNINA dealership, teaching embroidery and garment sewing.
Jenifer has been sewing her entire life, as she began honing her skills by her mother’s side using her very own Featherweight. Her talents were validated at an early age when she won National 4H in fashion design and sewing.
She continued developing her skills at Auburn University with a degree in fashion and apparel design. Her talents took her through a variety of jobs working in men’s and women’s clothing as a Pattern and First Sample Maker for cut and sew operations, and even a short stint in automotive interiors!
Except for 3 years in Germany, Jenifer has lived in the southeast US, and is now happy living in Fort Lauderdale with her cat, hubby, and a room full of BERNINA embroidery, sewing and serger machines, and a lifetime supply of fabric, thread, and notions!
My life is a combination of work I love and am passionate about, my search for healthier living, being aware of the little gems in the days and weeks, growing a business while keeping my family a priority, managing my creative time at the office, enjoying every second of my days, and crafting a creative, happy life.
I’ve been in the corporate world of broadcast design, having worked for years designing and animating graphics for tv shows and managing others. It came with rewards and prestige but also came with stress, long days, and a nagging sense that I was not doing what I came here to do, both in my daily living and my art. I decided to pursue work that was more personal and artistic through illustration, textile and surface design and exploring ways of sharing my vision through licensing my artwork. My work now starts from my heart and blooms with color, happiness and inspiration. I love to create. Whether it is decorating our work-in-progress modern-ish home or making up a new recipe for friends and family, it is all part of the creative journey. My work projects range from greeting cards and calendars to collections for tabletop and entertaining, to rugs and home decor. My days at my studio help me create the space I come home to, with products to share and products for the home- ones with color, warmth, connection and stylish design.
It’s all a work in progress…and along the way I have met wonderful artists, my great agent, helpful manufacturers and good friends as I continue to learn new things everyday about the industries I create for.
